An Interview With Our Lovely Artist, Dizzyworld2!

4/13/2015

Hello, everyone! Although a bit unorthodox, I had the pleasure of being able to interview our very own Dizzyworld2 this past Sunday! If you didn't know so already, she created all of the sprites for Lucid9's female cast. Without further ado, here it is!

Mac: Hello, Dizzyworld2! May I call you 'Dizzy'?
Dizzyworld2: Hello~ Of course!
Mac: How are you doing today, Dizzy?
Dizzyworld2: I'm doing well, finishing up various assignments.
Mac: Is it hard to be a college student and work on Lucid9 at the same time?
Dizzyworld2: Yes. It's particularly bad when there's a rush of 1 to 2 exams per week for 3 weeks in a row. Studying is very important! I typically work on the art at least 2 times a week, usually during the weekends.
Mac: That sounds rough! Moving on though, how old were you when you first began to draw? Also, what first inspired you to do so?
Dizzyworld2: I've actually drew for fun since I was very little haha. But I seriously picked up anime art around when I was in 3rd grade after watching InuYasha. Since I'm currently a 1st year at uni, that's 10 years ago. I got into anime then as well, although I've watched quite a bit before.
Mac: That's such a young age to start at! Now, when you draw digitally, which software and tablet do you use?
Dizzyworld2: Yep~ Currently, I use a Wacom Bamboo. I use Paint Tool SAI for the line art and coloring and Photoshop for background and effects. I'm not very good with photoshop (the bg artist, Yuuko, helped me discover new things) but I have been using it a lot more the past year.
Mac: Just like the saying, practice does make perfect! Dizzy, may we know what your favorite visual novel is? And no, you can't say Lucid9!
Dizzyworld2: Haha XD My favorite's Little Busters! by Key. The theme of friendship and growing up captured my heart~ I can't think about Refrain, the true route, without a heartache.. Completely random but the Kyousuke + Midorikawa combo = instant favorite character.
Mac: I cried at the end of Refrain, embarrassingly enough... Lucid9 though! You've been with us nearly since the beginning, right? What caused you to join?
Dizzyworld2: Yes, I joined FSS a little bit after it was created, when the genre, heroine count, and such were being determined. My biggest motivation was to provide art for a visual novel! I've wanted to work on visual novels for a few years but that hasn't been successful.
Mac: I'm glad we snatched you up before someone else did! Anyway, out of all the characters in Lucid9, who is your favorite?
Dizzyworld2: Haha, thank you. My favorite's Rui for sure. I really like childhood friend characters and Rui isn't an exception~
Mac: She does seem to be the fan favorite~ As the female character sprite artist, which heroine was the hardest to draw?
Dizzyworld2: The hardest was Elizabeth. It took me a couple of tries to get her height right. If I'm correct, she's supposed to be or close to Yama's height :O
Mac: Please forgive me then! Now, in our main Skype group, many weird conversations occur on a daily basis. What was the most memorable one yet?
Dizzyworld2: Don't worry about it! It was a good experience to be able to draw a variety of characters~ I second you on that haha. Memorable huh.. There's so many. One of them is Dia and Sarah. Them and their flail............. (facepalm)
Mac: Dia (Diamonit) is always doing something... unique with Sarah... Dizzy, I have a fun question for you: If everyone in our team, but yourself, was dying of a deadly virus and you had the ability to save only one person, who would it be?
Dizzyworld2: Mac, you're doing this on purpose haha.. It would be Yuuko, the background artist. But there has to be a way to save everyone ;_;
Mac: I don't know what you're talking about~ Sometimes, you can't save everyone... but you were supposed to pick me! Moving on though, are there any other artists that you look up to?
Dizzyworld2: Too many to list. Just a few (in no particular order) are Takeuchi Takashi (Type Moon), Sayori (NekoPara), Kantoku (Your Diary), and Nardack.
Mac: A fan of cats in boxes, I see. As an artist yourself, if you had to give one tip to aspiring artists, what would it be?
Dizzyworld2: Haha. I've actually known about Sayori's Chocola and Vanilla few years before NekoPara was announced~ Best one is to keep practicing! Back when I had lots of time, I used to draw 1 picture a day. Needless to say, that was the time when my art improved the most!
Mac: Don't ever stop drawing, Dizzy! Back to Lucid9 once more, what are your plans after Lucid9 is complete?
Dizzyworld2: I hope I won't! Hmm, if FSS wants to continue making more VNs, I would like to stick around and help out :)
Mac: I'm positive that we will be making more! Anyway, it looks like I ran out of questions to ask you, Dizzy! Thank you so much for your time!
Dizzyworld2: No problem, thank you for the interview!
Mac: Until next time, goodbye!
Dizzyworld2: Bye~

I apologize if you were hoping for a voice interview! Maybe next time?

Demo 2.0 Release

Fallen Snow Studios is very glad to announce that Demo 2.0 has been finished and is ready to read on our site! A huge thank you to everyone who took the time to provide us with feedback from the previous demo. We're still always open to suggestions and critique, so if you have the time, please feel free to share your thoughts in our forums. There are some things we may already be aware of that needs fixing, but there are some that we haven't thought of, so feedback would greatly be appreciated.

The estimated reading time for Demo 2.0 is around 3-4 hours. Something important to take note of: we're attempting to implement Day 5—which was suppose to be in this demo—very soon. We simply didn't have enough time to input it into the engine before the deadline (especially since Day 5 has a monstrous word length), but we decided to release Days 1-4 regardless.

There might be a few bugs present, but we've got you covered. Before playing Lucid9, please read our disclaimer. There, you'll find some basic solutions to any problems you may have. For those of you who are still having trouble that isn't listed, please stop by our troubleshooting thread and we'll do everything possible to help you out.

We deeply apologize for any inconveniences and ask if you can please be patient with us. Thanks! ^_^

This may be our second demo, but we're still a long way from finishing; Demo 2.0 is only about 30-40% of the Common Route. We're taking this a few steps at a time, hence why we're releasing these demos and not the entire game all at once.

Thank you for following us this far in our journey! Or If you happen to just stumble across our project and it interests you, you can support us by sharing Lucid9 with everyone you know.

If you're really interested, you can even apply for a position on our team. Currently, there's an opening for a Chibi Artist and a Background Artist. You can find more info in our Apply Page.

Thank you for reading and we hope you all enjoy the demo! Until next time.

~ Fallen Snow Studios

Special thanks to :

- Dizzy for drawing so many awesome sprites even though she is so busy with her own school assignments and her preparations for her con!
- Luna Chai, 'cause she's awesome
- Yuuko for being able to draw so many wonderful backgrounds
- Elphaze for the awesome Gover Mecher CGs!
- Bluehour, Jaytea who composed tracks for us on such short notice, and Wolfie who arranged some of them for us!

Guess what, people? We're alive!

In fact, we're more than alive. We're working hard to pump out the ever elusive second demo! Currently, it's slated to be released in early April. For real this time.

How far have we progressed, do you ask? Well, a picture is worth a thousand words, and that's probably what you're actually interested in.

So without further ado... it's time for some assets!

(Disclaimer: the following story content are placeholders and may or may not appear in the demo.)
An adorable song, courtesy of awesome composer JayTea? Shazam.
Picture
Jaw-dropping background art courtesy of our fine artist, Yuuko? Boom.
Picture
Sprite colorings for different times of the day? Bam. Updated GUI? Pow.
Aaaand, for just $4.99 a month, we'll also throw in a... oh, wait. Kidding. Got a bit carried away.

In short, this demo is gonna be great! So, hope to see you guys soon!

Important News

As much as I'd like to avoid using cliche phrases, I can't help but use this one: time seems to have quickly flown by. As we head into February, most of us in Fallen Snow Studios are already stuffing our backpacks with books and trudging back to school.

We've had a few setbacks during our winter break. Our programmer has been trying his best to fix the issues present on the engine, but unfortunately couldn't find the time to do so due to personal issues. The next demo of Lucid9 will be much longer than the first, and we feel that the engine has too many hiccups for you guys to read it comfortably. Thus, we had to delay the release of the next demo. I deeply apologize to those who have been waiting patiently.

Understandably, it can sometimes be difficult to juggle your personal life along with a project. There might be a few instances where a member simply gets too busy and has to leave, but we are always keeping alternatives in mind should that happen. As they say, "The show must go on!" (Another cliche. Sorry...)

There is good news, though. I'll share a few updates on the overall progress of Lucid9.

                                            Art

The art department has been running smoothly. For us, Christmas never ended as we saw the Art Board filled with... well, art. Thanks, guys~

Along with backgrounds, more poses have been made for the characters. Each of them should have at least two for the next demo.

She is so damn cute...

                                                                                  Writing

- Common Route
Writing has also been progressing at a steady pace. So far, Common Route now has 140k words! The writing for the next demo is mostly done and editing is underway. The upcoming demo is projected to have 80k words, compared to the previous which had around 7k words. If I did my math right, that should amount to 4 and a half hours of reading.

- Heroine Routes
The general skeletons of the routes have been planned. Currently, it's a matter of fleshing everything out in extreme detail. (For my route in particular, I have 8 different documents that serve some kind of purpose pertaining to the route. But that's just how I organize.)

On a side note, we have an open position for another background artist.
You don't necessarily have to be an artist (even though some experience in drawing might help), we just need people with decent to good photoshop skills.

That's all the news for now. Thank you for supporting us! I'll see you in the next update.

Updates and the like

We're still alive and kicking!

Despite our being somewhat incommunicado for a little while, Fallen Snow Studios is most assuredly still alive and well.  Here to point out this fact is the newest member of the Studio, 'Just Another Player', the new writer for the purple-haired perfectionist, Elizabeth.

-

I'm most definitely excited to be a part of the studio.  There's an absolute ton of really, really interesting concepts driving the story itself.  In just the past few weeks that I've had the privilege of working with FSS, I've managed to get something of a glimpse into the guts of the VN-to-be.  Hundreds upon hundreds of pages of drafts and ideas later, I'm beyond merely optimistic about the future of the VN.  I'm thoroughly convinced that in the next few months of development and refinement that it will absolutely become something worth your time if you're a fan of the genre.

It's just got so many driving ideas behind it that really manage to engage me personally.  (As probably the least fanatical fan of VN's on the team!)  Even just the availability of the pure scripts and ideas behind the game were absolutely fascinating to read through.  This should mean that when these stories are finally coupled together with art and music from our talented artists, and the programming expertise that we've got driving everything, things should be...  well, pretty damn awesome.

All in all, it's a project that I'm ecstatic to be a part of!

Work's going slow and steadily, especially now that the majority of the staff is going back to school after the all-too-brief break.  But rest-assured, work on the project is definitely ongoing and coming along at a pretty decent pace.  Beyond simply taking my word for it, there should hopefully be some real concrete updates in the near future as well.
